Bookkeeping truly is more than just recording income and expenses. A good bookkeeper helps a business with their cash flow and financial and tax reporting. With this being said, ALL businesses need a bookkeeper, preferably an unrelated third party with some accounting background – so no, this does NOT mean your significant other who has no idea what they are doing but wants to help – you’ll miss deductions and then you’ll both be pissed off and blame one another. However, if you find yourself in the following circumstances, I will say you are in dire need of a professional bookkeeper:
Your books and records are outdated.
You should ideally be able to update them monthly but quarterly is also a safe option for smaller businesses.
You rush to get things together at tax time.
This could cost you tax savings and increase the chance that your return will need to be amended. This could also increase the bill you receive from your tax preparer.
You don’t have any knowledge about basic accounting.
Again, this could cost you tax savings and preparer fees!
You don’t have enough time in a day to run your business and keep the books updated.
Let’s face it, you just don’t!
As a business owner, I am sure you will understand the saying “Leave it to the professionals” – contact me today to do just that and leave your bookkeeping with an expert in tax and accounting rules & regulations – a CPA!
